Dog Training Tips |
How To Prevent Dog Bite Most humans are not aware that some of their body postures when greeting an unfamiliar dog are perceived as a threat in the dog world. For example: typical human behavior when... |
The Wolf Pack Theory There is an order humans and wolves follow. Wolves have become one of the most highly social of all carnivores. Wolves and wild dogs live in packs. A pack is a group of animals that are usually related by close blood ties (family units) like humans. A hierarchical order exists within the pack and every animal... |
Puppy Play Biting One dog training method myth I'd like to bust is the idea of stopping puppy play biting by holding your dog's nose and saying "NO BITE!"
I feel strongly about this topic because it so obviously contradicts what we know about dogs - one of their primary methods of communication is body language. To quote Carina Norris on BeanTown Dogs.net, "…dogs use a large proportion of this constant motion... |
Gun Dog Training Program

Pointers: Approx 12 week dog training program. Emphasis on obedience, retrieving and pointing skills.
The training process we use is versatile to all types and breeds of dogs with us being able to modify the training for each dog as an individual. Our training methods are intended to promote dogs that are confident and stylish. We help each dog... |
Dealing With Your Dog's Chewing Puppies start to lose their puppy teeth around four months of age. By seven months your puppy should have a full set of adult teeth. During this period of time the chances are good that your puppy will experience some discomfort and try to alleviate that pain by chewing on things. Chewing is a normal behavior for dogs. Instead of discouraging your puppy from chewing, redirect his chewing to appropriate items. Puppies should not be allowed the run of the house... |
Fearful Dogs When afraid your dog may display certain body postures, including lowering his head, lowering his whole body, flattening his ears back against his head, and tucking his tail between his legs. A frightened dog may also pant, salivate, tremble, pace, or try to escape. He may show submissive behaviors-avoiding eye contact, urinating submissively, or rolling over to expose his belly-or he may freeze and remain immobile. Some dogs will bark and/or growl at the object that is causing their fear and may appear to be confident in this display, but are really trying to create distance... |
How Dogs Learn Although it may be hard for some of us to resist the temptation to think of our dogs as our “kids,” when we set out to train them to live in the human world, we must keep in mind that they really aren’t furry little people. They aren’t born understanding our language or our culture. In fact, their instincts are often much different from what humans consider good manners and common sense. We must actually teach them how to coexist in a human... |
Rewards A reward can be anything your dog likes. Different dogs may have different likes and dislikes, just like people. I have worked with some dogs that love bananas, strawberries, apples, carrots & asparagus, and think meat and dog biscuits are just so-so. My dog quite likes fresh meat and cheese, but will spit a banana right out…and super smelly, moist dog treats are so-so in her view. However, for my dog, a chance to play tug or a chance to greet another dog or a child are rewards she’s happiest... |
